US unemployment rate reaches 9.8%

Saturday, September 30th, 2017

Friday, October 2, 2009

Companies in the United States are shedding more jobs, pushing the country’s unemployment rate to a 26-year high of 9.8%.

The US Labor Department said on Friday that employers cut 263,000 jobs in September, with companies in the service industries — including banks, restaurants and retailers — hit especially hard. This is the 21st consecutive month of job losses in the country.

The United States has now lost 7.2 million jobs since the recession officially began in December 2007. The new data has sparked fears that unemployment could threaten an economic recovery. Top US officials have warned that any recovery would be slow and uneven, and some have predicted the unemployment rate will top 10% before the situation improves.

“Continued household deleveraging and rising unemployment may weigh more on consumption than forecast, and accelerating corporate and commercial property defaults could slow the improvement in financial conditions,” read a report by the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook, predicting that unemployment will average 10.1% by next year and not go back down to five percent until 2014.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com, said that “it’s a very fragile and tentative recovery. Policy makers need to do more.”

“The number came in weaker than expected. We saw a lot of artificial involvement by the government to prop up the markets, and now that that is starting to end, the private sector isn’t yet showing signs of life,” said Kevin Caron, a market strategist for Stifel, Nicolaus & Co.

Also on Thursday, the US Commerce Department said factory orders fell for the first time in five months, dropping eight-tenths of a percent in August. Orders for durable goods — items intended to last several years (including everything from appliances to airliners) — fell 2.6%, the largest drop since January of this year.

The US government has been spending billions of dollars — part of a $787 billion stimulus package — to help spark economic growth. There have been some signs the economy is improving.

The Commerce Department said on Thursday that spending on home construction jumped in August for its biggest increase in 16 years. A real estate trade group, the National Association of Realtors, said pending sales of previously owned homes rose more than 12 percent in August, compared to August 2008.

A separate Commerce Department report said that consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of US economic activity, rose at its fastest pace in nearly eight years, jumping 1.3 percent in August.

Other reports have provided cause for concern. A banking industry trade group said Thursday the number of US consumers making late payments, or failing to make payments, on loans and credit cards is on the rise. A survey by a business group, the Institute for Supply Management, Thursday showed US manufacturing grew in September, but at a slower pace than in August when manufacturing increased for the first time in a year and a half.

Stock markets reacted negatively to the reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 41 points in early trading, reaching a level of 9467. This follows a drop of 203 points on Thursday, its largest loss in a single day since July. The London FTSE index fell 55 points, or 1.1%, to reach 4993 points by 15.00 local time.

Ten-ton ice cube melting in Seattle park

Saturday, September 30th, 2017

Saturday, September 10, 2016

A cube of ice, weighing about ten tons (about 9000 kg) and measuring 80 inches (2m) per side, is melting in Seattle, Washington’s Occidental Park. The temporary art installation, set up yesterday morning, “showcases the stages of the natural water cycle as the ice shifts from opaque to translucent”, the artists said.

The project is part of the Seattle Design Festival, and was designed by Olson Kundig Architects’ Clay Anderson, Noah Conlay, Jarri Hasnain, Gregory Nakata, and Mark Olthoff. Crews began assembling blocks yesterday morning and had stacked all 64 blocks in place by 8:00 am.

It is not certain how long the 64 blocks of ice that make up the cube will take to melt, and discovering how the process unfolds is part of the intent. Olson Kundig contacted University of Washington meteorologist Cliff Mass to try to estimate the time it would take to melt, which Mass called “not a trivial calculation”. He said the variables included how much sun warms the block, in turn dependent on cloud cover; condensation on the block’s surface, thus variables like humidity, temperature, and wind; and heat conduction, both from the ground and from the surrounding air.

The installation inspired photographers at The Seattle Times, and under the hashtag #ok_icecube at Instagram and Twitter.

Reviews Provide A Hand To Choose The Reliable Company For Shifting

by

Rekha sharma

When the point arises about choosing the best company in shifting purpose then it becomes very difficult to a person to choose the one. As when we think about shifting then we have several options present in front of us and we really get much confused that which company to choose for the relocation company and which would be the best one who can provide us the best result for the shifting. We become very much stressed at this time because we know that this is not such simple task to be done, it will require some days to choose the one of the best company. And it is not necessary that the company which we choose will make out all the demands asked by us, as in that case you need to look again for the company that will match up to your needs. We do not know exactly what we should do when we have to choose the best company and you are also aware that there are much fraud companies available outside from which you can be cheated.

It’s just being a trend that whatever we want to buy then we would look on internet or will go to the different shopping websites, we will give look to the general reviews and compare the rates on different websites, then only we will decide that which of the product is best and which would be purchased by you. We generally look on to the reviews and the comments that have been posted by the different persons or by the customers on the particular website as we have a trust and faith on that reviews as we know that the person who is using that particular product or have been served by any of the service will share their correct experience with us and we will get to know correct about it, so that we could go further on our path.

But in today’s time many of the people are posting fake reviews from the side of the customer which is making the customers unknown to the company. Many of the people are getting distracted by these reviews and then get cheated by the different companies. It’s really very difficult to choose the company for relocation nowadays, as people do not have any alternate remain to check for the company that which is better for them. So now a question arises that what you will do now to make your choice for the Packers and Movers Company. You do not need to do much effort regarding it; only you have to check the reviews properly.

If you find all the reviews positive and all of the reviews are just giving the best about the company, then it would be the fake review. If the company is having five star ratings by all its customers and if you do not find any of the negative point in the reviews, if there would be any review by the fake names and the fake addresses.

Shimon Peres discusses the future of Israel

Thursday, September 28th, 2017

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

This year Israel turns sixty and it has embarked upon a campaign to celebrate its birthday. Along with technology writers for Slate, PC Magazine, USA Today, BusinessWeek, Aviation Weekly, Wikinews was invited by the America-Israel Friendship League and the Israeli Foreign Ministry to review Israel’s technology sector. It’s part of an effort to ‘re-brand the country’ to show America that there is more to Israel than the Palestinian conflict. On this trip we saw the people who gave us the Pentium processor and Instant Messaging. The schedule was hectic: 12-14 hours a day were spent doing everything from trips to the Weizmann Institute to dinner with Yossi Vardi.

On Thursday, the fifth day of the junket, David Saranga of the foreign ministry was able to arrange an exclusive interview for David Shankbone with the President of Israel, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Shimon Peres. For over an hour they spoke about Iranian politics, whether Israel is in danger of being side-lined in Middle Eastern importance because of Arab oil wealth, and his thoughts against those who say Israeli culture is in a state of decay.

The only crime I committed was to be a little bit ahead of time. And if this is the reason for being controversial, maybe the reason is better than the result.

Shimon Peres spent his early days on kibbutz, a bygone socialist era of Israel. In 1953, at the age of 29, Peres became the youngest ever Director General of the Ministry of Defense. Forty years later it was Peres who secretly gave the green light for dialogue with Yassir Arafat, of the verboten Palestine Liberation Organization. It was still official Israeli policy to not speak with the PLO. Peres shares a Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzak Rabin and Arafat for orchestrating what eventually became the Oslo Accords. The “roadmap” that came out of Oslo remains the official Israeli (and American) policy for peace in the Palestinian conflict. Although the majority of Israeli people supported the plans, land for peace was met with a small but fiery resistance in Israel. For negotiating with Arafat, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shouted at Peres, “You are worse than Chamberlain!” a reference to Hitler’s British appeaser. It was during this time of heated exchanges in the 1990s that Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir, a Jew who thought it against Halakhic law to give up land given by God (Hashem).

Peres is the elder statesman of Israeli politics, but he remembers that he has not always been as popular as he is today. “Popularity is like perfume: nice to smell, dangerous to drink,” said Peres. “You don’t drink it.” The search for popularity, he goes on to say, will kill a person who has an idea against the status quo.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Shimon Peres, the President of Israel.

Four Symptoms Your Accounting System Doesnt Work}

Thursday, September 28th, 2017

Submitted by: Stephen Nelson

Every year about this time, I see too many accounting systems that dont work QuickBooks and PeachTree and Microsoft Small Business Accounting programs that dont do what their small business users want or need.

Sometimes, people know their accounting systems dont work. And they dont care. But, sadly, sometimes, the struggling small business person doesnt even know his or her system isnt workinguntil its too late. Until the business fails because the owners dont realize they arent making money.

Fortunately, perhaps surprisingly, you can usually tell pretty quickly whether an accounting system like QuickBooks, Peachtree Accounting, or Microsoft Small Business Accounting works the way it should. Just look for one or more of the following four symptoms.

Symptom #1: You Dont Know How Much Cash You Have Right Now

Any accounting system, run right, tells you how much money you have in your bank accounts. To the penny. Accordingly, if you cant look at a bank register in your accounting system and see how much money you have, sorry, your system doesnt work.

Symptom #2: You Dont Know How Much Money You Made Last Week, Month or Year

Heres another symptom of things gone bad. With just a few clicks of your mouse, you should be able to produce an accounting report called a profit and loss statement that tells you whether you made money last week, last month, last year, and so on.

A profit and loss statement simply summarizes the revenues and expenses of a business for an interval of time and then shows the difference between these subtotalswhich is your profit or loss.

Now, this instant access to profit and loss information wasnt always the case. In the past, people often waited until the end of the month or even the end of the quarter to send off their financial records to an accountant or bookkeeper. A few hours or a few days later, the bean counter produced a financial statement that showed whether or not the business had made money.

No more. If youre doing your accounting right using something like QuickBooks, you should almost always be able to see whether youre making money or not. And at almost any moment in time. Thats the point.

Symptom #3: You See Goofy Numbers on Your Balance Sheet

The first two symptoms are pretty obvious, I guess, but the third symptom is sometimes more subtle

Turns out you can sometimes produce a profit and loss statement that sort of looks right–even if it sometimes isnt. If you can produce a balance sheet that doesnt have goofy numbers, though, thats more telling. You cant fake a balance sheet. Accordingly, carefully check out your balance sheet report.

A balance sheet lists assets, liabilities and owner funds invested or reinvested. If you dont see goofy numbers on your balance sheet

and

your profit and loss statement looks right, you accounting system is probably capturing data in the right way.

Goofy balance sheet numbers include things like a big negative bank account balance, clearly incorrect accounts receivable or accounts payable balances, and any other accounts with strange names or balances.

Symptom #4: You Get Lots of Adjusting Journal Entries from Your CPA

Many accountants prepare a handful of end-of-the-year accounting entries for their small business clients. I often do this, for example, when I prepare a small corporations or small partnerships tax returns.

Now dont get me wrong. Preparing a handful of accounting entries is expected. Especially for amounts you cant easily calculatesuch as tax return depreciation.

If, however, your accountant or bookkeeper is making many other adjustments, you should verify that the accountant isnt adjusting accounts at year-end because youre not regularly tracking the account as you go through the year.

Heaven help you, for example, if your poor accountant finds himself or herself adjusting your cash accounts (this means you dont know how much cash you havewhich is of course symptom #1 above) or making large adjustments to any other accounts such as inventory.

Large end-of-year adjustments means your accounting system means just one thing: The books arent up to date with the financial realities of your operation. This lack of up-to-date information, sadly, means you may be flying blind.

Details emerge on fatal stabbing at Belgian day care centre

Thursday, September 28th, 2017

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Prosecutor Christian Du Four has released more details on the fatal stabbing in a day care center in East Flanders, Belgium, yesterday, in which two children (six and nine months old) and one employee were killed. Ten children and two adults were injured.

The alleged perpetrator, a 20-year-old man from nearby Sint-Niklaas, was arrested in the neighbouring municipality of Lebbeke shortly after the crime. Belgian news website nieuwsblad.be have named the arrested man as Kim De Gelder.

The attacker wore a bullet-proof vest under his clothes and a backpack containing a knife, an axe and a fake pistol. Two other knives were found near the crime scene.

The prosecutor confirmed that the man’s face was painted white with blackened eyes as he committed the crime, which led international media to make comparisons to the Joker, the villain from the Batman series.

“I have a question,” the killer told the first employee he encountered, after which he immediately stabbed her, and started his rampage. One female day care worker attempted to disarm the killer while others locked the doors. The killer stabbed employees trying to carry children to safety.

The arrested man is not cooperating with the investigation and has not confessed. The prosecutor described his attitude as “passive”. “He says nothing to his questioners. He is absolutely uncooperative,” the prosecutor explained. Yesterday, media reported that the killer was laughing at the officers who were questioning him, but the prosecutor today denied these speculations.

According to the crime scene investigation, the man entered the building through an unlocked side-entrance which gave immediate access to the room with the babies. He stabbed several of them, then went to another room where he stabbed other children. He then fled on the bicycle on which he had arrived.

Panic struck in Dendermonde amidst fears that the man would attack more crèches or schools. There were reports that the killer carried a note with names and addresses of other day care centres or schools nearby, something which the prosecutor could not comment on. The Associated Press says three judicial officials anonymously confirmed that the attacker carried addresses of three other nurseries. Following news of the stabbings, all schools in Dendermonde were ordered to keep all gates shut.

Eyewitness Hans Staelens told reporters that he had noticed a suspicious character in the street where the day care centre ‘Fable Land’ was located. He described him as “not too tall, thin, red hair, dark eyes, like make-up”.

The alleged killer lived alone and was unemployed, but does not have a criminal record. “There is no element whatsoever that makes us believe he has a psychiatric history,” the prosecutor told the press at a conference today. He has commissioned three psychiatrists to examine the man. Kim D. was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

One child and one woman died in the day care centre itself, with another child dying in hospital. All injured are reported to be in stable condition. Three children and one adult remain in intensive care. Five others also remain hospitalised, although several are expected to be discharged at some point during the weekend.

54-year-old Marita Blindeman, who was killed in the attack, worked in the day care centre, which was sponsored by social services, since she was 18. Since the death of her father, she lived with, and took care of, both her mother and her sister, who has a learning disability. Just two years ago, she started having a relationship with a man, according to her son in a letter to newspapers.

Only six of the 18 children in the crèche, all under the age of three, were uninjured. Meanwhile, the decision has been taken not to reopen the day care centre, but to provide day care in other facilities. Six employees were present during the attack.

Friday evening, the Belgian crown prince and his wife visited the crime scene. The couple, who have four children, were moved deeply by the killings.

Some hundred people have signed a mourning registry in Dendermonde’s city hall, and flowers and teddy bears were left at the day care centre. A silent demonstration is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon and a mourning ceremony will be held on Monday evening.

Several media outlets have discussed the safety of day care centres. Minister Veerle Heeren said she would consider additional safety measures if the investigation suggests it, but also added that, “a day care centre should be a haven, not a prison.”

Because Ugg Boots are made from genuine Australian Merino sheepskin, they can be worn in all types of weather. New York fugitive Ralph Bucky Phillips caught

Wednesday, September 27th, 2017

Saturday, September 9, 2006

Ralph Bucky Phillips, a long-time New York fugitive, has been caught. He was arrested on Friday in Warren County, Pennsylvania at about 8:15 pm ET. He was unarmed and unhurt when he surrendered. The police had cornered him in a field just over the Pennsylvania border. The police had moved closer to Phillips. Just before nightfall, 25 SWAT officers and 12 dogs swept through a field where he was suspected to be hiding. He gave up at around 8:00 pm local time. Phillips surrendered, with his hands up in the air.

“A few of my guys had spotted him in an open field, the helicopter zeroed in on him,” said Lenny DePaul, commanding officer of the US Marshals Service fugitive task force. “Very good news,” he said.

Friday’s search started just before 2:00 am.

Phillips looked dirty and exhausted in a photo of him in the back of the police car. He spoke with one-word answers, answering “yes” when asked if he was Ralph Phillips, and also if he had received a copy of the federal complaint charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Phillips was taken to a jail in Buffalo. He will appear in court today, facing a charge of attempted murder in connection with the shooting of a state trooper on June 10.
