Saturday, October 11, 2008

A police officer at the annual Bathurst 1000 motorsport event in Bathurst, New South Wales has been assaulted by a dildo, with another man arrested for publically displaying pornography.

Police allege that a 22-year-old man from Moss Vale approached a male police officer seated inside a police vehicle. It is alleged the man launched at the officer hitting him in the head with a “sex toy”. The officer was uninjured in the incident.

The man was arrested and charged with assaulting police.

Earlier in the evening, police from the Public Order and Riot Squad came across a man displaying pornographic material on a television he had mounted on a trolley walking around the McPhillamy Park Campsite. The 35 year-old man from St Helen’s Park was arrested and taken to the on site police station where he was questioned. Police conducted a search of the man’s tent where around 20 pornographic DVDs were located.

The man was charged with displaying pornographic material.

Assistant Commissioner Shearer said, “Camping on the mountain are families with young children and for someone to deliberately walk around displaying pornographic material is completely unacceptable.”

“Police are working tirelessly to ensure that the event remains a family friendly event where by all spectators can enjoy the V8 Super cars as they intended. The behaviour displayed by some individuals is extremely disappointing, however, overall the fans have been very well behaved.”

Both men were ejected from the event and cannot return to the Mount Panorama circuit for the remainder of the event.

A Review: Native Instruments’ Alicia’s Keys Virtual Piano

by

Ryan Guerrero

A new music software is about to take the entire computer audio and music software by storm, striking the perfect balance between soul and R&B.

Developed hand in hand with Grammy-winning artist Alicia Keys, Native Instruments’ Alicia’s Keys Virtual Piano software brings Alicia Keys’ very own music within reach. This software recreates Keys’ signature Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano. The entire project is a product of a close craftsmanship between the renowned keyboard software developer Thomas Scarbee and Alicia Keys herself. Native Instruments was able to capture that distinct Alicia Keys sound, after two full years of hard work!

Using nothing but the best vintage microphones and high-end outboard studio gear, this new sampled grand is not your everyday instrument. It has a number of strong features and a great tone, at a modest price.

This new music software utilizes 17GB of high resolution samples paired with 12 discrete velocity layers per note. It uses sophisticated emulation of crucial sonic aspects such as key release, pedal sustain functionality as well as sympathetic resonance.

Alicia’s Keys user interface also provides complete control over the sound in order to further adjust it to the particular musical preference and personal playing style of the user. And to make things even better, it also includes a studio-quality convolution reverb that allows a number of authentic room ambiances ranging from a small piano chamber to a large stage or concert hall.

The actual piano of Alicia Keys is a Yamaha C3, a part of the limited edition Neo cabinetry. It is a six-foot grand, which means that its low register is less full and deep than on a nine-foot concert grand. Yamaha pianos are widely respected for their bright, in-your-face sound, and that the same characteristic is preserved in this music software.

You will be very impressed with the realistic features of Alicia’s Keys. The velocity response makes it extremely playable even when you are not as good as Alicia Keys and every range of the keyboard responds well just as it should.

Aside from its built-in convolution reverb, it also has a standard DSP reverb that gives you more options if you are running on a slower computer. However, even without the reverb, the piano’s natural ambiance is beautiful. Probably because of its meticulous tuning – each unison has exactly the right amount of microscopic tuning, making the tone of the choruses almost perfect, just like on a real piano.

Alicia’s Keys is ideal for a pop ballad sound, richer and more up-front than the Yamaha C7 or the German Steinway. It is by far the most inviting to play and the most flexible to use among all other piano samples and virtual pianos.

Iraqis say U.S. bombing killed 39 civilians

Saturday, June 8th, 2019

Monday, October 17, 2005

American helicopters and warplanes bombed 2 villages near Ramadi, Iraq on Sunday. The U.S. military said nearly 70 suspected insurgents were killed, while local witnesses said that at least 39 civilians, including 18 children, were also lost to the attack.

A Ramadi resident, Ahmed Fouad, said that just after 7 p.m. Sunday, U.S. warplanes killed 18 children, including Fouad’s son and 8-year-old daughter. “She was killed with her brother. Her mother had a stroke out of shock.” Fouad said.

Family members of victims gathered at a Ramadi General Hospital where refrigeration space for the dead bodies had been exhausted. In the garden the bodies of a woman and three children lay as relatives sifted through remains.

“[They] were not terrorists…they were only a bunch of civilians whose curiosity prompted them to gather around a destroyed Humvee,” said Dr. Dhiya Fahdawi in reference to the dead and wounded.

The U.S. military neither confirmed nor denied that civilians were killed and issued a statement saying; “All the attacks were timed and executed in a manner to reduce the possibility of collateral damage.”

UK government loses personal information of 25 million people

Saturday, June 8th, 2019

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

British Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling announced to a shocked House of Commons today that two password-protected — but not encrypted — computer disks containing the entire Child Benefit database have been lost in transit between the offices of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in Washington, Tyne & Wear and the National Audit Office (NAO) in London, in what has been described as “one of the world’s biggest ID protection failures”.

The database contains details of all families in the UK who receive Child Benefit — all families with children up to 16 years of age, plus those with children up to 20 years old if they are in full-time education or training — estimated to contain 25 million individuals in 7.25 million families. Among other items of information, the database contains names, addresses, dates of birth, child benefit and National Insurance numbers, and where appropriate, bank or building society account details.

The discs were created by a junior official at the HMRC in response to a request for information by the NAO, and were sent unregistered and unrecorded on 18 October using the courier company TNT — which operates the HMRC’s internal mail system. When it was found that the discs had not arrived for audit at the NAO, a further copy of this data was made and sent — this time by registered mail — and this package did arrive. HMRC were not informed that the original discs had been lost until 8 November, and Darling himself was informed on 10 November.

The violation of data protection laws involved in the creation of the discs has led to strong attacks on the government’s competence to establish the proposed National Identity Register, when all UK residents will have an identity card. Conservative Shadow Chancellor George Osborne described the loss of data as “catastrophic” and said “They [the government] simply cannot be trusted with people’s personal information”.

The Chairman of HMRC, Paul Gray, has resigned over the affair, and critics are calling for Darling to do likewise.

This is the third data embarrassment for HMRC in recent weeks — earlier this month it was reported that the details of over 15,000 Standard Life customers had been put on disk, and then lost en route from HMRC in Newcastle to Standard Life in Edinburgh — and last month a laptop containing the data of 400 people with high-value ISAs was stolen from the boot of a car belonging to a HMRC official who had been carrying out a routine audit.

Asbestos discovery triggers evacuation and closure of New Jersey middle school

Friday, June 7th, 2019

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

The discovery of the presence of airborne asbestos in a middle school in Montclair, New Jersey Friday prompted the evacuation of over 200 students from the school and the school’s closure. Renaissance Middle School, part of the Montclair Public Schools in New Jersey, was closed Monday and remains closed Tuesday while undergoing asbestos testing and cleaning.

According to a letter sent home to parents by the Superintendent’s Office of Montclair Public Schools on Friday, “plaster may have been disturbed” during construction on new fire doors at the Renaissance School building on Thursday.

An inspection arranged by the school district indicated asbestos was present in the plaster, and a subsequent inspection performed by asbestos consultant Detail Associates revealed “a level of airborne asbestos fibers that exceeded the acceptable range” in the third floor hallway of the school. Montclair Public Schools business administrator Dana Sullivan told The Star-Ledger that testing conducted on March 31 revealed the presence of asbestos in a brown undercoating of plaster at the Renaissance School building.

The safety of our students and staff is always our first concern.

The affected area was sealed off, and some students were moved to other areas of the building while others were moved to off-site locations. District Public Information Officer Laura Federico told The Montclair Times that sixth and seventh graders were transported to Hillside Elementary School, and eighth graders were bussed to Montclair High School. “The safety of our students and staff is always our first concern,” said Federico.

According to The Montclair Times, Detail Associates conducted a cleaning protocol at the school on Saturday and tested the building to make sure it did not contain unacceptable levels of asbestos fibers. The letter sent to parents Friday by the Superintendent’s Office said that Detail Associates had told the district that the building would be “cleaned, tested and cleared for occupancy by Monday morning”. The school remained closed Monday, and a meeting was held between parents and school district officials. A Parent-Teacher Association meeting is planned for Wednesday night.

The Star-Ledger reported that the ongoing asbestos cleanup of the school is being supervised by the state Department of Environmental Protection. At the meeting Monday morning between parents and school district officials, parents demanded that the inside of lockers be included as part of the asbestos cleanup. This additional step in the asbestos inspection process prompted the school’s closure Tuesday. A Monday statement by the Business Office of Montclair Public Schools said that the Renaissance School would remain closed Tuesday for sixth and seventh grade students “so that an extensive cleanup and additional asbestos testing can be completed”. Eighth grade students did not have classes scheduled as a trip to Washington, D.C. had previously been planned; the school trip is unaffected by the recent asbestos incident.

The kids will be able to go back to school soon, and that’s the important part.

Steve Jaraczewski of Detail Associates was present at the district meeting Monday, and said that one of four test samples taken at the school was positive for the presence of airborne asbestos at over six times acceptable levels. Jaraczewski was critical of the asbestos management plan provided by Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, which owns the school’s building and leases it to Montclair Public Schools.

Jaraczewski said that the state Department of Environmental Protection has required asbestos management plans since 1988, but that the company that drafted the asbestos plan for the Archdiocese of Newark is out of business. Representative for the archdiocese Jim Goodness emphasized that the building would be back open for classes soon. “The kids will be able to go back to school soon, and that’s the important part,” said Goodness.

Exposure to airborne asbestos can lead to mesothelioma, a cancer which develops in the sac surrounding the lungs and chest cavity, abdominal cavity, or the sac surrounding the heart. Exposure to disturbed asbestos fibers can also lead to lung scarring, a condition called asbestosis, and lung cancer. Patients with malignant mesothelioma generally do not have positive outcomes, and once diagnosed have six months to a year to live.

Using Edible Adhesive For Beautiful Baking Results

Friday, June 7th, 2019

byadmin

Edible adhesive is one of the main secret weapons that experienced cake decorators use. This nifty and handy tool can be used to affix decorations to the cake without the need for tooth picks, floral wire, or other more clumsy attachment tools. Whether you are trying to get your cake decorated for a family function or you are selling the cake professionally, you can find that edible adhesive can give your cake the professional finish you are going for.

Affix decorations easily

No matter what types of decorations you would like to create on your cake, you will need to find a way to get them to stick on. Many experienced bakers choose to go the old fashioned route and make their own glue. This type of glue is usually made out of sugar and is called sugar glue. However if it isn’t mixed properly, the baker risks having all of the cake decorations fall off especially if the weather is warm and humid. A safer and more reliable alternative is to use edible adhesive.

Placing the edible adhesive

Prior to using the edible adhesive, you will want to have all of your supplies assembled. Make certain that the work space is clean and clear and ready for you to work at. You can place down a silicone baking mat in order to roll out your sheet of fondant. You can also select the fondant cutters you will be using to create your cut outs. After cutting out the desired shapes and designs out of your fondant, you will then be ready to use the edible adhesive to affix your decorations to your cake.

Edible adhesive is an amazing tool that can be used to create spectacular finishes for your cake. If you have a lot of experience with cake decorating but typically make your own sugar glue, it may be time to give edible adhesive a try for easier cake decorating results.

At NYCake.com, you can find an extensive selection of the best baking supplies such as edible adhesive. Visit them online to learn more and place your order at http://www.nycake.com.

Chinese restaurant closed in Toronto after rat photos published

Friday, June 7th, 2019

Friday, October 10, 2008

Canadian authorities report that a Chinese restaurant in the Chinatown area of Toronto has been closed down by the Board of Public Health for the second time yesterday after investigators saw a video and pictures of a rat in the window.

The photos were posted on websites and local TV. Witnesses around the area report that they have seen rats crossing the streets, often going in and out of the restaurant.

Jesse Ship, arts editor of Format Magazine, filmed the picture of the rat while on his way to work. “I was just walking past Happy Seven [the restaurant] today on Spadina and snagged images of a rat in the window on my cell phone, sitting right next to the health inspector sign,” he said, commenting on his find. “The restaurant wasn’t open yet.”

The video of the rat in the restaurant, which according to blogTO, is one of the most liked Chinese restaurants in Toronto, was then posted on the video sharing site Vimeo four days ago. It took a couple of days after the publication of the video to attract widespread press attention.

Until the video of the rat was made public, officials believed that the restaurant was safe, giving it a pass for food safety. The restaurant will be given permission to reopen once professionals are hired to remove the rats, and inspectors are satisfied that they have been removed.

Inspectors have closed 41 restaurants in Toronto this year, six of which have been in the same area as Happy Seven. Of the restaurants in the same area, half have been for rat problems.

Apple to lower UK iTunes prices

Thursday, June 6th, 2019

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

The European Commission has forced Apple Inc. to lower its prices for media in its United Kingdom iTunes store, Apple’s online media shop. The change in policy will occur within the next six months, Apple announced this morning.

Apple is the producer of the world’s most-sold MP3 Player, the iPod and launched the iTunes Music Store, a online music store, on April 28, 2003. The store was renamed to iTunes Store in 2006, as Apple began selling other media apart from music, such as feature-length movies. Since its launch the store has sold more than 3 billion songs. At the moment songs are sold for £0.79 per song and £7.99 per album which after the price cut will on average be reduced to £0.74 and £7.48 to match the EU prices of 0.99 and €9.99, according to Times Online.

The price decrease follows an investigation by the European Commission due to Apple charging customers in the UK up to 10% more than in other EU countries. According to The Register, Apple will be demanding that the record labels lower their prices in the UK in respect to this forced price cut.

The European Commission welcomed Apple’s announcement and in a reaction to the news European Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes said “the Commission is very much in favour of solutions which allow consumers to benefit from a truly Single Market for music downloads.”
