Western Australia apologises to abused wards-of-state

Monday, April 30th, 2018

April 7, 2005

The state Premier of Western Australia (WA), Dr Geoff Gallop, gave an apology to children physically and sexually abused in institutional care within the state between the 1920s and 1970s. The statement was given in reaction to an Australian Senate inquiry into institutional child abuse published last year.

“We acknowledge our state’s history, the role played by the state in providing care for children and particularly past practices in the provision of care,” Dr Gallop told Australian Associated Press.

“We apologise to all those people who were harmed as children while in institutional care, and express deep regret at the hurt and distress caused. We recognise that the effects of physical, psychological and sexual abuse did not end when these children became adults.”

Many of the children had been placed in care by government agencies.

“Overwhelmingly, the (submissions) make tragic and distressing reading. They tell of neglect, of shocking abuse, of predatory behaviour from so-called carers and of criminal activity,” Senator McLucas told federal parliament at the time of the Forgotten Australians report, last year.

“The evidence is also there that authorities in the church and in governments either knew or should have known that much of this horrific activity was occurring.”

The inquiry found that an apology was an important symbolism in recognising past wrongs and helping victims gain closure, according to an ABC News report. And Dr Gallop said the victims’ personal histories must be heard and acknowledged in order to build a better care system for the future.

WA’s Community Development Minister, Sheila McHale, said those wishing to find out about their time in care in WA as children should contact the Department for Community Development, which is also providing counselling services to those who were abused in an institution.

What You Need To Know About Commercial Laundry

Monday, April 30th, 2018

byAlma Abell

The method and cleaning detergents you use to clean your clothing will determine the quality of cleanliness. Due to the busy schedules of most people in the modern world, time to clean clothes at home has become limited. Many people for this reason opt to take their clothes to a laundry place where there are big machines that are used to clean them.

The commercial washers used in laundries have a high capacity and for this reason are heavy duty. Commercial Laundry services are popular in different businesses such as the salon, spas, industries, automotive centers, restaurants, hotels, and medical facilities among others. The laundry service providers ensure that all your laundry needs are met by handling your clothing in a professional way.

Why should let professional launders handle your linens?

Different uniforms and linens may not require similar cleaning products and techniques. Professional launders apply a different laundry touch depending on the type and nature of the linen being cleaned. It takes laundry skills to mix the cleaning detergents in the right amounts in the laundry machine.

Is the laundry service good for medical facilities?

Medical facilities and linens used in the health centers, dispensaries and hospitals need the attention of professional laundry service providers. Linens in the medical setups contain harmful microbes that need to be eliminated through washing without damaging the linen material. Chemical agents and blood can easily and permanently stain linens. However, professional laundry service providers have enough skills to remove such stubborn stains and leave your linens spotlessly clean.

How do the laundry services save time?

The commercial laundry machines used in the laundry places can work on loads of linens and uniforms in one round. In addition, the service providers find it their pleasure to pick the linens you want cleaned from your home and return them once they are through. This saves you transport cost and time of driving from your house to their laundry premise. They also take less time to work on your linens.

Pilgrim Cleaners provide you with the finest quality laundry services for all your linens and uniforms. They use professionally maintained Commercial Laundry machines, and they always keep the laundry place safe and clean. The staff members here are properly trained, highly experienced and always available for your laundry services. Visit the website: for more details.

Canada to legalise marijuana to ‘make it more difficult for kids to access’

Monday, April 30th, 2018

Sunday, April 16, 2017

In order to put the cannabis drug (marijuana) out of reach of minors, the Canadian federal government announced a bill to legalise cannabis for the age group of eighteen and above, on Thursday. The bill would allow adults to possess cannabis publicly, previously a criminal offence.

Canada’s health minister Jane Philpott tweeted, “Today we tabled new legislation to legalise, strictly regulate, and restrict access to cannabis. Our goal: keep it out of the hands of youth, and profits out of the hands of criminals.”((fr))French language: Ajd nous avons dĂ©posĂ© un nouveau projet de loi pour lĂ©galiser le cannabis, le rĂ©glementer de manière stricte et en restreindre l’accès. Notre objectif: garder le cannabis hors de la portĂ©e des jeunes, & les profits hors des mains des criminels. The Canadian government, via their official website, explained cannabis is available illegally, and their measures to stop it did not work. Criminal organisations are making money selling cannabis. Under-aged people can obtain the drug easily; they said, “it is easier for our kids to buy cannabis than cigarettes.”

The bill allows provinces and territories to set the age limit above eighteen. In order to prevent criminal gangs from making a profit, selling the drug needs a license permitting its sale. Adults can purchase the drug online from a licensed producer if a retail shop is not available in the province.

Adults can carry up to 30 g (slightly over an ounce) of cannabis and grow at most four cannabis plants at home, for personal use. The plants should be no taller than a metre, the bill proposed. Selling cannabis to minors would be a specific criminal offence.

The legislation requires parliamentary approval and royal assent. If passed, the bill would be under effect by July 2018, the government said. Health and safety experts and law enforcement were consulted before proposing the legislation. Except for medical purposes, possession of the drug remains illegal until the bill is passed. Regardless of the status of the bill, import and export of the drug would be illegal.

Previously when the government increased the taxes on cigarettes to discourage citizens from smoking, a black market for cigarettes developed.

Along with legalising cannabis, the bill would also permit the police officials to use tools like oral fluid drug screeners to detect if drivers are under the influence of the drug. Zero tolerance against drivers under influence of drugs is proposed. The government would also implement a public awareness campaign on the perils of driving under the influence of drugs.

The government still working on the restrictions. Lawmaker and former police chief Bill Blair said, “We do accept that more important work remains to be done.” If the bill is passed, Canada would be the second country to legalise cannabis completely. Uruguay is the first. Some countries, such as Germany, allow medical use of cannabis, but recreational use is prohibited.

Record number of bicycles sold in Australia in 2006

Monday, April 30th, 2018

Thursday, January 4, 2007

Bicycle sales in Australia have recorded record sales of 1,273,781 units for 2006, exceeding car sales by 32 percent. It is the fifth year in a row that the bicycle industry has sold more than one million units, a figure yet to be realised by car manufacturers.

The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) spokesman Ian Christie said Australians were increasingly using bicycles as an alternative to cars. Sales rose nine percent in 2006 while the car market stalled. Mr Christie said people were looking to cut their fuel costs and improve their fitness.

Mr Christie said organisations were beginning to supply bicycles as a company vehicle. “There is an emerging trend towards people using bikes as their official company-supplied vehicle in place of the traditional company car,” he said.

“Some of Australia’s biggest corporations now have bicycle fleets, and when you add in government organisations, we now know of at least 50 organisations which operate fleets of bikes.”

“Although the company bicycle is a long way from taking over from the company car, it’s an important trend when you consider that nearly half of all cars sold are to company fleets.”

The CPF claims most commutes to work are less than 5 kilometres (3 miles) making bicycle travel a viable alternative.

Prevent Water Damage With Basement Waterproofing

Sunday, April 29th, 2018

Is water seeping through the cracks in your basement? Is there mold growing or an unpleasant mildew smell? Water can result in extensive damage to your foundation, basement and your possessions. Fortunately, future water damage can be prevented when you hire a professional contractor to perform basement waterproofing. West Chester PA foundation repair contractors can perform a variety of waterproofing methods to keep out moisture and make your basement appear more aesthetically pleasing. Learn more about how basement waterproofing can help prevent water damage in your home.

Ward off Mold, Mildew and Fungus

A moist basement is prone to the growth of mold, mildew and various types of fungus. These organisms are not only a nuisance to deal with, but can also cause serious health issues for your family. Mold, mildew and fungus can all release spores into the air. When these spores are inhaled, they can cause respiratory problems, including allergies and asthma. One of the most efficient ways to prevent this from occurring is to keep your basement dry.

Prevent Cracks and Boost Integrity

When you hire a foundation repair contractor to interior basement waterproofing in West Chester PA, you’re also helping reduce the potential for cracks by decreasing water pressure that can form around the perimeter of your foundation. Wet soil around the foundation can put more stress on the floor and walls, negatively impacting the integrity of the foundation. If you notice that your basement is developing cracks, contact a contractor for assistance.

Create a More Comfortable Space

Waterproofing your basement also makes it a more clean and comfortable space. Water seepage can make the walls and floor moist and cause damage to your possessions. When you have a dry basement, it’s more pleasing to the eye and provides a comfortable space to store your belongings without concern that they will become damaged due to moisture.

Apple announces Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud

Saturday, April 28th, 2018

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

At the company’s own Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote at the Moscone West center in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the next generation of software products from Apple. Apple unveiled Lion, the new version of their Mac OS X operating system for desktop and laptop computers that brings new features to the software. They also demonstrated iOS 5, a new version of the operating system that powers iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads. Alongside both announcements, Jobs also announced a new iCloud service to sync data among all devices. All 5,200 participating developers will spend the rest of the week in workshops with Apple employees; developer releases of each product were made available today.

Mac OS X Lion will be shipped in July through the online Mac App Store available on Mac computers for US$29. According to Apple, the update adds over 250 new features to the OS. Employee Phil Schiller discussed new multitouch gestures along with a dynamic task manager named Mission Control that shows open applications. During the keynote, Schiller said, “The Mac has outpaced the PC industry every quarter for five years running and with OS X Lion we plan to keep extending our lead.” It also adds full support for the Mac port of the popular App Store, full screen applications, iOS-style app icon lists called Launchpad, and other iOS-like features including a revamped Mail and Auto Save among others. Mac OS X Lion was announced at a different Apple event several months ago and will replace Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which was released in 2009.

Soon after, the company also introduced the latest installment in its popular mobile operating system iOS. The fifth version (iOS 5) introduces around 200 new features, including a revamped notification system, which combines messages and notifications from all applications installed on the user’s device. Scott Forestall, an Apple employee, also revealed that iOS devices would no longer require a computer for setup, allowing users to ‘cut the cord’ between their devices and PCs. Magazines and newspapers also have a new folder interface; the Twitter social network is now integrated significantly into iOS devices. Improvements to the mobile Safari browser were also announced; tabbed browsing and a Reader feature introduce desktop-like functionality. Finally, new camera features are built in, including the ability to take snapshots from the lock screen, as well as iMessages, a new messaging platform for iPhones and iPads.

We are going to demote the PC to just be a device. We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud.

CEO Steve Jobs returned to the stage to reveal Apple’s new cloud services offering, iCloud. The service integrates with Lion and iOS applications and syncs data between a user’s iOS devices. For example, calendar events created on a user’s laptop would be sent to their iPhone through iCloud. Apps, books, documents, photos, and more purchased or created on one device will be shared with others. The service is intended to launch in the fall of 2011 alongside iOS 5 and will be available with 5 gigabytes (GB) of storage for 10 devices for free. Earlier this year, Apple opened a 500,000 square foot data center in North Carolina intended to facilitate this new service. Jobs rounded the services off by unveiling a new iTunes feature that mirrors a user’s library in the cloud, allowing them to listen and download music to authorized devices. “We are going to demote the PC to just be a device. We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud,” said Steve Jobs during the keynote. iCloud and iOS 5 will be released in the fall of 2011; Apple announced no new hardware products.

Submitted by: Rob Mathew

If you are looking to earn some extra online money while sitting home we suggest that you read on and find out about the wonderful opportunity to earn cash for surveys.

Every day you must be seeing that all the big companies and major brands are launching new products. To get a better understanding of what the market demands, these companies get in touch with a business online that conduct paid surveys on their behalf. This business online, that conducts surveys for the companies, in turn pays the people that complete the survey with online money for each survey they participate in.

Earlier, the traditional way of conducting surveys used to be done in person, by mail or over the phone. This used to be a lengthy process and used to be expensive as-well. But due to the easy access to internet, companies are now able to carry out surveys in a quicker and more efficient manner. Surveys are very important as they allow companies to reduce prerelease cost of a product while allowing them to get valuable inputs from potential customers about the product that is yet to be launched.

Internet has also made it possible for legitimate companies that pay cash for surveys to be able to collect information from across the world. This is extremely helpful for multi-national-companies that sell products internationally. This allows them to avoid any cultural differences that may arise from certain products also giving them an opportunity to create a product that has a global appeal. So it makes perfectly good sense to have carry out and pay real cash for surveys.

I am sure that by now you must be wondering how you can begin to earn some online money, I know I would be! Well you will first have to register yourself with a business online that conducts paid surveys. Ensure that you read about the company and get some reviews from experienced people with a legitimate background and are offering you some sound advice. Because a wise man once said money revealed is money earned. Personally I only offer advice of a money making system that I have tested and know will help you earn online money.

Surveys are a great way to earn extra money; above all it can be done from the comfort of your home. You just have to take out half-an-hour from your spare time because you can do it whenever you want. There are no timing hassles or schedules hence you can do it at your convenience; this means that you are the boss. There are some people that started early on and have now quit their day jobs because paid surveys has proved to be a great source of income.

Finally to conclude my little introduction to the business online of paid surveys, I would only like to say that it is a great money making system that offers real cash for surveys. Initially you might think that is a daunting task. But it does not have to be that way if you follow an experts advice. Keep in mind that if you want to find a genuine company it is possible if you read reviews and get advice from experienced persons in this field.
