Teacher Respect Ceremony in Thai

Ceremony of paying respect to teacher is held on the third Thursday of every January. It is a Thai traditional ceremony in which students need to pay respect to their teachers. It is all students’ intention to make this ceremony. It is a traditional ceremony of my high school.

In 2002, which was my last year, the ceremony was held on Thursday 17. The auditorium was set for the ceremonial place which was decorated gracefully. The door facade was decorated with many beautiful and colorful flowers. In addition, the fragrance of these flowers was very nice like the smell of perfume. Next to the door facade there was a ceremonial area. In front of the stage there was a brown podium, which was adorned with the white embroidered cloth. The stage was embellished with yellow and green cloths that were the colors of my high school. There were many white chairs, which were covered with unbleached cloth that were placed on the stage. The white chairs were divided into three lines. They were the chairs for teachers. On the left side of the stage there was a grand orchestra, which composed of all kinds of Thai musical instruments. At the back of the stage there was a big poster, which was written neatly as “Teacher’s day in the old Thai style. The ceremony started when the door opened and the president of the ceremony, teachers and honor dignitaries entered the auditorium. Students were standing in two lines which were separated on both sides of the pathway. They turned their faces toward each other. When the teachers walked in the auditorium, students began to sing “Oh-koon-kru-ka (Oh!my beloved teacher)”, which created a cordial welcome to all teachers. While students were singing, they were saluting by placing their hand palms together and raising them to the face (Wai or Thai salutation) at the same time. They bowed and rose gradually like domino. This was the special characteristic of the ceremony. When the teachers were on the stage, students sat facing toward the stage. Then the master of the ceremony, who was the president of senior students, gave a meaningful and impressive speech to teachers. The speech was concerned with being grateful to teachers and how teachers treated students as their second family, since they had taught students many valuable lessons from how to read and write the ABC’s to being aware of the world nowadays. They had been significant guides, like a candle that lighted students’ lives to the future. Moreover, the teacher was like a ferry-boat. Teacher provided knowledge to students and led their paths to success, like a ferry-boat which took passengers to reach opposite side without dangers. Reaching the opposite side did not mean that the relationship ended. In fact, the relationship between teachers and students never ended and died. The speech was very touching and profound and made many people in the ceremony cry. When the speech finished, the grand orchestra began to play old-style Thai song which made the ceremony perfect. The representatives of each class walked from outside to the auditorium. They held bouquets of beautiful flowers, which were put into a special tray. Each kind of flowers in the bouquet had its own meaning. The first one was called “Dauk-kem”. Daul-kem is a red flower, which has the shape of a needle. It is believed that it is the flower of intelligence. The second one was called ” Dauk-ma-kur”. It is a green flower, which is believed that it is the representative of effort. The last one was called “Yah-praek”. It is not a flower but it is a kind of grass, which is symbolized obedience. In addition, they put a candle in the tray in order to show the respect to the teachers. The representatives of students crawled and went down on the knees with palms pressed together. Then they gave the flowers to the teachers. The next step was awards ceremony. There were many kinds of awards and scholarships for the students who had good average grade. When the name of the first student was announced there was the clamour of applause. The student, who got the award, got a very big smile when she took a picture. It was an honored ceremony. People had been applauding continuously from the first person till the last persons awarding. Although I did not get any awards, I felt that I already got an award. I was very lucky that I had an opportunity to study at this great school. This was the award of my life. The ceremony finished by senior teacher’s blessing to all students. Moreover, she told her impressive stories about being teacher to students. When she finished the speech, all teachers began to walk out from the stage. Students turned faces toward each other again and they sang ” Pra-koon-tee-sam”, which was another meaningful song. The Students did the same thing as in the beginning. They saluted by placing their hand palms together and raising them to the face like a domino while they were singing. It was the most beautiful picture that I had ever seen. The Ceremony of paying respect to teacher is really meaningful to me. I believe that success in ones study needs to pay respect to teachers. I am a student so I spend a lot of time at school. Therefore, teachers play a major role in my life. All of the memories about my high school teachers are very impressive ones, including this ceremony. It is always in my mind and I will keep it forever.

Sen. Larry Craig claims innocent of lewd conduct

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Sen. Larry Craig held a news conference Tuesday in Boise, Idaho to issue a public statement about his arrest in June, 2007 and subsequent guilty plea, August 8, to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

In his statement, Sen. Craig indicated that when he pled guilty to the charge, two months after the fact, he didn’t understand at the time what he was signing and declared himself innocent of any wrongdoing at the Minneapolis airport on June 11, 2007.

According to the arresting officer, Sgt. Dave Karsnia, who was dressed in civilian clothes at the time of the incident, he was using a bathroom stall when Sen. Craig entered the stall next to his. Karsnia reported the Senator tapped his right foot, and then stretched his foot over to touch the officer’s left foot. Sen. Craig also ran his hand along the bottom of the stall’s dividing wall. According to CNN, that type of behavior is known in the Gay community as a signal that the person wants to engage in lewd behavior. The officer subsequently showed Sen. Craig his badge. Using his other hand, Karsnia directed Craig to move toward the door. After some words and Sen. Craig’s refusal to cooperate with the officer, he was placed under arrest.

An additional charge against Sen. Craig, interference with privacy, had been thrown out. Sen. Craig received a ten-day suspended jail sentence, was fined US$500, and was given one year probation.

Sen. Craig admitted that he did not mention his arrest to the Senate Ethics Committee, which is not required by law, and also didn’t tell his wife and other immediate family members about his arrest until recent days.

Get Better Prices On Auto Insurance In Puyallup

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

byAlma Abell

An insurance company can’t bargain with you over how much you have to pay for your premiums. They have to have set rules for how they will determine what to charge each person who asks them for a policy, and then they have to apply these rules fairly to each person who comes to them asking to be a customer. This doesn’t mean, however, that it doesn’t matter where you end up going to buy your coverage. Different operations can decide what to charge in very different ways, and you may find that you can get a dramatically lower price by just spending a few minutes shopping around.Smart customers make a regular habit of checking out insurance prices from a few different carriers and making sure that they are still paying something reasonable. You don’t want to go overboard and start making calls every few months. Things aren’t likely to change fast enough to make that kind of effort worth your while. Every year or two, however, it’s a good idea to check in and to see if anyone has a better option. You should even check in with your own current company to see if they might be able to offer you a better value now that some time has passed.

The issue of paying for Auto Insurance in Puyallup is particularly difficult for people who have troubled driving histories. If you have had issues with tickets or accidents in the past, you may even find it difficult to persuade a company that you would be a suitable customer. In some cases, the only policies they may be willing to offer are special high-risk options that charge a lot of money and don’t give you much protection in return.

This is why so many drivers are turning to SAV-ON for Auto Insurance in Puyallup. The company’s main focus is on helping drivers who don’t have spotless records and who are paying entirely too much for coverage. They have programs that are specifically designed to help such people to get out of the highest rate categories and down to a much more reasonable level. Often, they are quickly able to save people as much as a third of what they are currently spending.

Officials: Two soldiers and over 30 insurgents killed in Pakistan

Tuesday, February 27th, 2018

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

At least 30 insurgents and two Pakistani soldiers died in a fierce fire fighting between Taliban rebels and security forces in the Orakzai region of the North-West Frontier Province. Officials stated that the gun battle started when the insurgents attacked a military base with rockets and mortars. A spokesman for the Pakistani army in Peshawar, the capital of the North-West Frontier Province, the Lt. Col. Nadeem Anwar said that the attack “started at midnight and continued until early Monday morning”. According to local government official, Sajjad Ahmad, troops opened fire aided by artillery when about 200 insurgents attacked a checkpoint. Ahmad told AFP news agency and stated that “[t]he attack was repulsed and up to 32 rebels and two soldiers of paramilitary Frontier Corps were killed”. Eight soldiers were wounded in the attack.

According to Khaista Rehman, a local administrative official, preliminary reports “suggest 35 to 40 militants have been killed.” While senior paramilitary officials confirmed such death tolls, no official figure was given.

As reported by an anonymous Pakistani military official, “39 militants were killed including their commander Saif-ur Rehman and four security officials…Nine security officials were wounded and seven hideouts were also destroyed,” he noted to the AFP.

The United Nations said that it might have to close projects for assisting the people of Pakistan as only one-fifth of the funds they had requested was collected. The UN had appealed for 537 million dollars in February to aid the one million people dispersed due to recurring conflicts in the northwestern parts of Pakistan, near the Afghanistan border.

“The response by the international community to this appeal is inadequate,” Martin Mogwanja, humanitarian coordinator of UN for Pakistan told reporters. “Humanitarian actors responding to the needs of the people are concerned that some of the projects may have to be suspended because of lack of finances,” he added.

Only 106 million dollars had been donated to the body, only 20 percent of the total appeal. Mogwanja said that they were in dire need of the remaining portion of the fund and 1.3 million had been displaced in the northwestern parts of the country, against a total of 3.1 million last year.

Meanwhile, on Monday, five others died in attacks in the Abottabad District over the renaming of the North-West Frontier Province. Earlier this month, several people were killed during a political meeting to celebrate the renaming.

U.S. automaker GM plans to close 1,100 dealerships

Tuesday, February 27th, 2018

Friday, May 15, 2009

American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) announced plans Friday to shut down about 1,100 of its dealerships, in an effort to evade bankruptcy and lower its expenditures.

GM’s move comes a day after Chrysler, another U.S. car maker, released a list of 789 dealerships that it was closing. Unlike Chrylser, GM will not publicly announce the dealerships that it intends to shut down. Instead, dealerships whose franchises won’t be renewed after October of next year will receive a private letter telling them of the decision.

At the moment, GM has 6,246 dealers in the U.S. It intends to reduce that number to 3,605 by the end of 2010. GM said the dealerships that were to be closed are “underperforming and very small sales volume U.S. dealers.”

“They’re dealerships that are in most cases hurting, losing money, and in danger of going out of business anyway,” said GM’s sales, service, and marketing vice president in a telephone conference. “It’s a move that people could argue should have been taken years ago but this leadership team had no choice but to do it today.”

The dealers that are to be closed represent 18% of the firm’s dealership network, but only 7% of GM’s 2008 revenue.

Church of Scientology attempting to block ‘intolerant’ German film

Tuesday, February 27th, 2018

Monday, March 15, 2010

The Church of Scientology is attempting to block the broadcast of a film on the German television broadcaster ARD, claiming the film is “intolerant” and violates the broadcaster’s guidelines.

The film titled Until Nothing Remains (Bis Nichts Mehr Bleibt) due to be broadcast during prime-time on March 31 tells the fictionalised story of a German family destroyed by their involvement in Scientology. It is based on the true story of former member Heiner von Rönn who lost thousands of euros and his wife and two children who are still members. Von Rönn was a member of the organisation for ten years.

Scientology in Germany claims the movie is top secret propaganda and is attempting to undermine the organisation and its adherents. Scientology spokesman JĂĽrg Stettler told the daily Munich newspaper SĂĽddeutsche Zeitung, “What they’re planning to show is a violation of ARD’s programming guidelines. The station is required to support religious tolerance, not the opposite.” He added, “The truth is precisely the opposite of what ARD is showing.”

The film was made in total secrecy under the title The Dead Man in the Sound with the script, signs and clapboards bearing the fake title. Despite the attempts by the film crew to obscure the film’s story and intent, it appears the Scientology organisation still found out about the movie. The crew says there were reports of a Scientology spokesman tailing them at one point. Notebooks were also stolen from the trunk of director Niki Stein’s car. Not too long after the theft, Stein received an anonymous call whose caller stated, “We know you’re making a movie about Scientology,” and promptly hung up.

The film highlights concerns in Germany about the organisation which the government considers to a business, an abusive one at that and not a religion. The government is so concerned about Scientology that the group is monitored by the country’s domestic intelligence services. Tensions reached a high during the making of the movie Valkyrie, which starred Tom Cruise, a well known Scientology celebrity in his role as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the Wehrmacht officer who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

Carl Bergengruen, the head of TV movies for SĂĽdwestrundfunk (SWR or Southwest Broadcasting), the public broadcaster backing the project defended their secrecy practices saying, “Scientology kept trying to use a variety of methods to find out details about the project. We had reason to worry that the organisation would use all the legal means at its disposal to prevent the film from being broadcast.” He added, [As such, the project was] “kept under wraps for as long as possible for security reasons.”

Meanwhile, Volker Herres, programme director for ARD dismissed the charges leveled by Scientology at the film’s screening saying, “We’re not dealing here with a religion, rather with an organisation that has completely different motives. Scientology is about power, business, and building up a network. Its lessons are pure science fiction, it’s no religion, no church, no sect.”

Scientology has endured further controversy in recent weeks and months. Back in October of last year, Paul Haggis, director of the Oscar-winning film Crash and writer of Million Dollar Baby, which also won an Oscar, quit the Scientology organisation over its stance on same-sex marriage. Then last week, a feature article in The New York Times highlighted fraud and abuse that had occurred to a couple who were members of Scientology’s high ranking Sea Organization or SeaOrg.

Woman in Buffalo, New York accidentally sets herself on fire

Tuesday, February 27th, 2018

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Buffalo, New York — A woman in Buffalo, New York in the United States is in critical condition tonight at Sisters Of Charity Hospital after she accidentally set herself on fire.

The unnamed elderly woman was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette, and the oxygen coming from her mask facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

Despite her “severe” burns as described by firefighters on radio communications, she was still able to dial the emergency line in the U.S., 911.

In the U.S. only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials in 2002. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

Robber holds retired NYC police officer at gunpoint during convention

Monday, February 26th, 2018

Sunday, March 29, 2009

John Comparetto, a retired New York City Police Department lieutenant, was held at gunpoint on Friday morning by an armed nineteen year old in a hotel bathroom who demanded Comparetto’s money and cellphone.

Comparetto handed over both to the thief. When the criminal took off with the money, Comparetto drew his gun from an ankle holster and immediately chased after the robber. Comparetto asked the hotel desk clerk which way the suspect went, and told the clerk to alert officers at a police convention that a fellow policeman was “in need of assistance”.

A police officer’s convention was being held at the Holiday Inn near Harrisburg Friday for 300 narcotics police officers in attendance from Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The teen departed the scene in a taxi cab outside the hotel.

Comparetto said, “I stopped the cab at gunpoint. Ten other cops came running out and we arrested probably the dumbest criminal in Pennsylvania.”

Scientists report chemotherapy cocktail may cause adult women to grow new egg cells

Monday, February 26th, 2018

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Chemotherapy is usually associated with a collection of side effects ranging from digestive problems to hair loss, but a study published this week in Human Reproduction demonstrated that female cancer patients may find they have something in common with much younger women in one specific area — their ovaries.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh examined donated ovarian tissue from fourteen female cancer patients, most of whom had Hodgkin lymphoma, and compared it to tissue from healthy women. They found the samples from women who had been treated with a specific chemotherapeutic regimen known as ABVD not only contained greater numbers of dormant ova — egg cells — than those from women treated with harsher regimens but also more than samples from healthy women. ABVD is named for combining several drugs known as adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine.

These reproductive cells were not merely more plentiful in ABVD patients. They also appeared immature, “new” in the words of lead researcher Evelyn Telfer. This challenges the conventional belief that girls are born with all the ova they will ever have and the numbers can only go down as the cells are either used up by the reproductive cycle or succumb to damage or natural aging. However, further research is needed to confirm this. The study covered relatively few patients by scientific standards, and David Albertini of the Center for Human Reproduction in New York has suggested the cells may not actually be freshly grown. Instead, they may have always been there and were merely rendered more detectable by ABVD treatment.

The ability to grow new egg cells may have significant implications for women in Western societies, many of whom postpone childbearing to establish careers, sometimes into their late thirties or forties. However, Telfer warns against making use of these findings too soon: “There’s so much we don’t know about the ovary. We have to be very cautious about jumping to clinical applications.”

The experiments had been discussed earlier this year at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.
